Our original print of skeletons frolicking in a graveyard was designed by DAPPER DAY Founder, Justin J., with 19th-century illustrations by the celebrated (and notorious) Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyōsai 河鍋暁斎 1831-1889.
Nicknamed "The Painting Demon" by a mentor, likely for his prolific output – and fondness for sake, he is credited with creating the first manga magazine in 1874.
Kyōsai held an interest in the macabre since childhood, when he found a severed head in a river and brought it home as a specimen. As an adult, he sketched his second wife’s dead body, an image which formed the basis of his painting Ghost (1868–70).
